Scale South Celebrates 50 Years!

It’s a big day at Scale South as April 1st marks their 50th Anniversary in business, a huge achievement for any small business. Augusta Scale Company was formed by Richard Bailey in 1974. The first year, he operated the company out of his home until moving into their first office, located off Lumpkin Road in Augusta. At the time they mainly serviced the Augusta area, but digital scales were really starting to take off during this period, and business grew rapidly. The company soon expanded to several locations throughout Georgia.

During the expansion, Augusta Scale Company became Georgia Scale Company to better represent their service reach. They were known as Georgia Scale Company until 2010. After opening locations in Columbia and Charleston, South Carolina, they became Scale South, Inc.

In 2019, after 45 years in the business, Richard Bailey retired and sold the company to Scott and Jennifer McKillip. The McKillips guided the company through the uncertain times of the pandemic, upgraded fleet vehicles, enhanced service and accounting systems to more modern technology, and had a hands-on approach in every aspect of the business.
